Welcome to Abandoned Brewery’s long-awaited Lower Hutt taproom—a place where the beer flows, the sandwiches are unapologetically massive, and the vibe is as laid-back as it gets. Whether you’re up for live comedy, local music, or just something cold in your hand, this spot is all about good times, no pretension.
From the moment you walk in, you’ll notice this place doesn’t take itself too seriously—and that’s the point. Every inch of the interior is covered in graffiti by Wellington street artist Porksta, making it feel more like you’re drinking under a bridge than in a polished bar. Even the bathroom walls are blank canvases, left intentionally bare so you can leave your mark.
At its heart, Abandoned Brewery Petone is a community hub. Dogs? Welcome. Kids? Bring them along. No need to be a craft beer connoisseur—just bring your mates and have a yarn. The beer list covers all bases, from hop-heavy hazies and bold sours to crisp lagers and easy-drinking pilsners. If you’re someone who just wants “something cold and fast,” they’ve got you covered too.
Then there’s the food. The menu revolves around a rotating lineup of big, messy sandwiches, with the Reuben being a clear crowd favourite. It’s a nod to the space’s former life as the iconic On Trays Scheckter’s Deli, with original deli owner Steven Scheckter even passing down his legendary Reuben recipe.
But Abandoned is more than a place to eat and drink. It’s quickly becoming one of Petone and the Hutt Valley’s top venues for live entertainment, hosting comedy nights and musical acts from across Aotearoa—and beyond.
So come as you are. Ride your bike, bring your dog, grab a beer, and settle in. Just don’t bring your ego.
