Enhancing the Heart of Petone

We are the Jackson Street Programme (JSP), an incorporated society established in 1992, committed to promoting, preserving, and enhancing Jackson Street in Petone as a dynamic and vibrant destination for heritage, shopping, dining, professional services, and socialising. Representing 235 local businesses along Jackson Street—from the Railway Station to Cuba Street—our goal is to make this historic retail strip a central hub for locals and visitors alike.


Our work is funded by a targeted rate on commercial ratepayers in Jackson Street, Petone, as well as through charitable donations and subscriptions from supporters and associate members. We operate with a dedicated team of part-time staff based at the Historic Police Station on Jackson Street. In addition to our regular activities, we organise a variety of community events and promotions to bring people together and highlight the unique character of the area.


We also work closely with the Hutt City Council, which is investing in enhancing Jackson Street’s streetscape, including the addition of heritage street lights, plantings, and paving—further solidifying Jackson Street as a prime destination for both shopping and cultural experiences.


Jackson Street is widely regarded as a gateway to the Hutt Valley and is often referred to as the “Jewel in the Hutt’s Crown.” With eclectic mix of shops, cafés, restaurants, and services, it continues to attract both locals and visitors, playing an essential role in the economic growth and vibrancy of Petone.
